Other Sports
Benfica isn't only about soccer, other sports also play a very active role, as they're followed by thousands of Benfica's fans. Check out some of our achievements:
Handball: It wasn't until the 80's that Benfica reached it's higher level in this modalitie, clinching three of it's six Portuguese Championships (82, 83 and 89) and three Portuguese Cups (85, 86 and 87). The women's section has won seven Portuguese Championships and seven Portuguese Cups, as well.
Athletics: Francisco Lázaro, in 1911, won the 1st National Cross Country, National Olympics and SC Progresso Grand Prix. Benfica obtained an Olympic medal in 1984, with António Leitão in the 500m. We hold 18 male cross titles, 22 male track titles, 6 female cross titles and 14 female track titles.
Basketballl: 20 Portuguese Championships, half of which won since 1985, and 17 Portuguese Cups. O Benfica foi campeão nacional de Basquetebol por 20 vezes, isto nas provas masculinas, em que dez das quais foram obtidas desde 1985. Carlos Lisboa, Jean Jacques and Mike Plowden leaded the team through an amazing european performance, in the 90's.
Pool: Alfredo Ferraz, in 1939, was the only one to win a World Title for Benfica. We also hold 9 Portuguese Championships and a pair of Portuguese Cups.
Cycling: José Maria Nicolau (twice), Peixoto Alves, Francisco Valada, Américo Silva, Fernando Mendes, Firmino Bernardino and David Plaza won the Tour of Portugal for Benfica. The team has recently returned to competition.
Field Hockey: Three National Championships and two Portuguese Cups.
Ring Hockey: We won 20 Portuguese titles and 12 Portuguese Cups, as well as an European trophy, CERS Cup, conquered in 1991.
Rugby: 8 national titles and 10 Portuguese Cups was everything we've won in this sport, so far.
Volleyball: Only two male and nine female Portuguese Championships conquered.
Swimming: Alexandre Yokochi won a B Olympic final for Benfica. We also hold a total of 36 individual senior national titles.
Triathlon: Vanessa Fernandes has recently finished runner-up in the World Cup.
