Is it common for players to have played for both Lisbon clubs or a complete no no (barring Cadete)?

Fairly common. Simão Sabrosa, one of our best players in the XXI century, actually came from Sporting's youth system. He was a Sporting  supporter as kid and eventually converted to Benfica, after playing for us, and he's currently working in the club.

João Mário, another product of Sporting's youth system is another such example. And he was even playing for them 2 years ago, on loan from Inter, but they ended up not paying his option to buy clause, so we snatched him up.

It's "common" as in it happens more often than in the Old Firm but it's still a huge no no. It's not received well at all by the supporters and it becames the focal point of the following derbies if the player is even slightly relevant.

It's basically the same culture as in Spain.

So who is Benfica's most hated ex player?

Então, quem é o ex-jogador mais odiado do Benfica?

There isn't any "Figo" figure.

Another user mentioned Paulo Sousa, that's a good shout, left directly for Sporting for more money while being a homegrown player and a fan favourite.

Maxi Pereira, who left Benfica for Porto, it another one.

I don't think the Benfica fan base is particularly prone to that kind of behaviour though. We focus more on ourselves than in our rivals and most of the hate is institutional (against Porto's president Pinto da Costa, against structures of power, etc).

I've noticed a few people dislike Cadete on here. Was he just over the hill at Benfica? Did he get a bad injury?

He was great at Celtic and was arguably one of my first football heroes along with Pierre Van Hoojdonk. By all accounts he was good at Sporting as well, I remember him scoring against Celtic. He got greedy though and decided to leave for more money after a season or so to Celta Vigo. If he had stayed for a few more years he could have been a club legend but then we may not have got Larsson. He was the start of Celtic's rebirth by signing players of his calibre (along with Pierre Van Hoojdonk, Paolo DiCanio and Andreas Thom) after the club almost went bankrupt in the early 1990's. Celtic were an absolute mess on and off the field between 1989-1994 or so. Unfortunately he didn't win anything at Celtic, our defence and goal keeper were still awful back then and we didn't win a title until 1997, the season after he left.

I didn't really follow his career after Celtic but I heard he had mental health issues and expressed regret leaving Celtic. He did not leave Celtic on good terms, demanding more money.

My only memory of Cadete is seeing him in a TV contest around the year of 2002 or 2003 here.

Our most hated is Maurice Johnstone. He is still called 'Judas'. It's not so much that he signed for Rangers but he stabbed everybody in the back by doing so, went against his word to re-sign for Celtic, even saying 'it's the only club I want to play for'. He was the first modern day catholic to sign for Rangers as well, the club had a no Catholics signing policy for almost a century. There's been a couple of other players who have played for both clubs. Mostly when they were in youth academies or fringe players but Kenny Miller played for both. He doesn't get too much hassle though. Johnstone's situation was different and he doesn't live in Glasgow anymore. It took a long time for Celtic to recover from it.

Passo a Palavra?
