Sunderland U23 2-1 Benfica U23 report: Black Cats make winning start in International Cup

Substitute Luke Molyneux struck late to get Sunderland's Premier League International Cup campaign off to a winning start against Benfica.

Joel Asoro's brilliant solo effort in the first half gave the Black Cats the lead against the Portuguese side but, minutes after George Brady had hit the woodwork, they were pegged back just after the hour mark as sub Heriberto Tavares only took a minute to make his mark and level.

But Molyneux netted the winner four minutes from time as Andy Welsh's side moved into second place in Group A, behind Benfica on goals scored but with a game in hand on the leaders.

Their next game in this competition is at Derby County next month.

Benfica knocked the ball around well in the early stages, albeit without offering a goal threat in the final third.

But Sunderland soon settled into the game with Asoro presenting a problem for the visitors down the right flank.

And it was the Sweden U21 international who broke the deadlock in the 19th minute with a stunning individual goal.

He collected the ball just outside the right-hand corner of the penalty area and nutmegged one defender, then checked inside another and fired a low left-footed shot across goal which went in off the left-hand post.

Elliott Embleton did not make the most of a shooting chance on his weaker right foot just after the half-hour.

At the other end, Euciodalcio Gomes sent a long-range shot straight at Max Stryjek.

And then only a brilliant block by Benfica keeper Ivan Zlobin prevented Ethan Robson doubling Sunderland's lead, after he had been put through inside the area on the left by Tommy Robson.

The visitors should have levelled just before the hour when Sunderland gave the ball away sloppily and Aurelio Buta got the better of Michael Ledger and found himself one-on-one with Stryjek, only to then waste the chance by dragging his shot wide of the left-hand post.

And minutes later George Brady headed against the crossbar from Rees Greenwood's left-wing corner.

But Benfica levelled on 63 minutes, as Tavares stabbed the ball home from close range following a goalmouth scramble.

Both sides pushed for a winner in the final 25 minutes, with Greenwood going closest for Sunderland when he forced a save out of Zlobin, while Stryjek denied Joao Carvalho.

The winner came in the 86th minute when Molyneux was on hand and unmarked to finish from six yards after George Honeyman's miscued shot from the left side of the area ran across the face of goal and into his path.
